This year the May Holiday was not warm and sunny, it was cool and it rained - heavily. Over 70 châteaux were open in Saint Émilion, Lussac and Puisseguin.
This year we visited Château Faugeres on the eastern border of the St Émilion AOC. The château was bought in 2005 by Silvio Denz, the owner of Lalique, who commissioned Mario Botta to design the new chai which has been built on the side of the plateau - to mixed reviews - I like it but many don't. I particularly like it when it is lit at night. Apart from the oak barrels and cuves, it is very high tech.
We had a tour of the chai, took the lift up to the balcony to admire the view, then tasted their fabulous wines.
Then on up the hill to Château Fombrauge, one of Bernard Magrex's many châteaux for a very interesting tour of the château and the chai before tasting their 2007.
